Here's what gas station owners need to know about the EV charging trend and their future. By contrast, gas stations along major highways between highly traveled destinations can be ideal for electric charging hubs. While there can be a first-mover advantage for gas stations, some owners, like Blake Smith, founder of SQRL Holdings, a gas station and convenience store operator, are taking it slow. His company operates more than 150 convenience store gas station locations and offers electric charging in select locations in Florida. "I would never recoup my investment," he said, adding that a move to all electric charging could be decades away.

San Francisco startup TeraWatt Infrastructure on Thursday announced it's developing the first network of electric vehicle-charging centers for heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks along the Interstate 10 highway, stretching from Long Beach, California, to the El Paso, Texas, area. The company, which raised more than $1 billion this year to build charging infrastructure, said the facilities will be located about 150 miles apart and less than one mile from the nearest highway exits across California, Arizona and New Mexico. Medium and heavy trucks make up only about 4% of vehicles in the U.S., but because of their larger size and greater travel distances the vehicles consume more than 25% of total highway fuel and represent nearly 30% of highway carbon emissions, according to the Department of Energy. "While there is a limited number of electric long-haul trucks on the road today, these vehicles are coming sooner than we think and we need the charging infrastructure to be ready," TeraWatt CEO Neha Palmer told CNBC.
DETROIT, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Terawatt Infrastructure will develop a U.S. network of charging stations for medium and heavy trucks along Interstate 10 between Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas, the electric vehicle charging startup said on Thursday, anticipating a significant increase in electric truck traffic along that largely desert corridor. Terawatt plans stations that could accommodate hundreds of trucks a day and offer amenities for waiting drivers, Palmer said. Charging stations capable of serving a medium or heavy-duty truck will require "significant investment" to bring adequate electric power to the site, Palmer said. Palmer said Terawatt will seek federal funding made available in the Biden administration's infrastructure bill and Inflation Reduction Act for electric vehicle charging development.
